High school student remains in critical condition following violent attacks in Auckland's Epsom

An Auckland Grammar School student remains in a critical condition in hospital after being injured in a violent rampage in Epsom.

A man is facing 17 charges, after allegedly assaulting a jogger, driving a stolen car into a group of high school students on bikes, and killing a dog on Wednesday.

The high school boy was training with four other students as part of a cycling club, when he was allegedly hit by the vehicle.

Two other boys were also injured, one with serious injuries and another with moderate injuries. Police said both have since been discharged from hospital.

The 49-year-old accused has been in Auckland City Hospital due to medical concerns but is under close police supervision.

He was due to appear in Auckland District Court on Thursday, but instead, his counsel, Jane-Frances O'Halloran, asked for more time to be able to talk to her client.

Judge Grant Fraser suppressed the man's name on an interim basis and allowed him to appear in court via an audio-visual link on Monday afternoon.

He would be remanded in custody after his medical concerns were dealt with.
