3 people dead after ‘tragic accident’ during transfer from Edmonton correctional facility: CSC

Federal agency announced deaths in a post on social media Thursday night

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says two of its officers and a person the agency says was an offender have died as a result of a “tragic accident during a transfer from Edmonton Institution for Women.”

The federal agency announced the deaths in a social media post Thursday night but provided no further details.

CBC News has contacted CSC and local police for more information about what happened.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time," the CSC post reads. "Our colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty served Canadians with professionalism, dedication, and courage.

"Their commitment to public safety and to CSC's mission leaves a lasting legacy, and we will ensure their invaluable contributions to our country are never forgotten."

Edmonton Institution for Women is in west Edmonton. CSC's website says it was built in the 1990s as a minimum-, medium-, and maximum-security facility "to address the unique needs of women offenders."
