Enough leptospirosis medicine available in Mandaue

MANDAUE CITY, Cebu — The Mandaue City Health Office has assured residents that leptospirosis prophylaxis and other preventive medicines are available at the City Health Office and barangay health centers amid the recent rains and flooding.

Assistant City Health Officer Dr. Phyllis Bidon said the city has sufficient stocks of prophylaxis, to ensure residents exposed to floodwaters can access treatment when needed.

She, however, reminded the public not to self-medicate, saying antibiotics should only be taken after consultation with a health worker, especially for children.

“Ang prophylaxis or prevention nga antibiotic (the prophylaxis or preventive antibiotic) is available. Nakaprepare man ta ana sa (We have prepared those in) city health and sa atoang (and in our) barangay health centers,” said Bidon.

Prevention promoted

Bidon said the health office continues to promote preventive measures, including washing the feet after exposure to floodwaters, monitoring for symptoms, and seeking immediate medical consultation if fever, leg pain or cramps, or eye-related symptoms develop.

She added that the city’s surveillance unit has not recorded an increase in leptospirosis cases, although hospitals in Mandaue continue to admit patients from neighboring localities, making it difficult to attribute cases specifically to city residents.

The City Health Office also continues to provide medical consultations, treatment of injuries, water and sanitation monitoring, nutrition services, and mental health support in evacuation centers during flooding incidents.
