A 43-year-old man from Feroke, who was being treated for Nipah virus infection at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), was discharged on Friday (August 7) after making a full recovery. He was admitted to the hospital’s isolation intensive care unit (ICU) in critical condition in the early hours of June 11 and spent nearly a month and a half on life support before his condition stabilised.

Hospital authorities said that he was fully conscious and oriented and could walk without assistance. Scans showed significant improvement in his neurological condition. His memory had been completely restored, and he no longer had a fever.

The infection was confirmed on June 10 after his samples were tested at the Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory at Kozhikode MCH and the ICMR-National Institute of Virology in Pune. At the time, he was receiving treatment at a private hospital. He was subsequently shifted to the MCH, where a dedicated medical team monitored and treated him.

Health officials said the treatment involved international coordination. The Health Minister’s office intervened to airlift the antiviral drug remdesivir from Bahrain. As his condition improved, he was shifted from the isolation ICU to a transit ICU on July 4. He was eventually taken off ventilator support and later transferred to a standard room, they said.
