Over the past year, we've seen airlines continue to add restrictions to the cheapest basic economy tickets. Now these unbundled fares are expanding to include premium seats: United introduced its new lower-priced business-class fare in April, and Delta followed with its own basic business fare in July.

These fares include access to the same larger seat but may lack other standard business-class amenities, like lounge access or two free checked bags. As such, these restrictions can increase the value of having a co-branded airline credit card or premium travel credit card.

With the right credit card, you can regain access to certain benefits while still paying the lower "basic" price. Here's how.

Do you have a credit card or travel rewards question?

Basic business fares are unbundled flights with a cheaper upfront price and fewer amenities. That means you'll have to pay for perks that are typically included with a more expensive ticket. You could be charged fees for additional checked bags and advance seat selection. The cheapest fares also can have higher change or cancellation fees.

Unbundled airfare was initially largely confined to ultra-low-cost carriers like Frontier Airlines and the now-defunct Spirit Airlines. This practice slowly became standard when the major airlines introduced basic economy fares. Over time, basic economy flights have become more restrictive, and in some cases you won't earn miles on basic economy tickets.

Now, more airlines are rolling out unbundled premium fares. You'll still get the same bigger comfy seat with these cheaper tickets, but you'll have to pay for what used to be included. Basic premium fares are available with Delta, United and a handful of international airlines.

If you're interested in purchasing one of these lower-priced premium fares, here's what you could be missing out on or have to pay extra for (restrictions vary by airline):

  • Free advanced seat selection
  • Additional free checked bags
  • Airport lounge access
  • Free changes or cancellations
  • Earn fewer miles
  • Upgrades
  • Priority check-in

Co-branded credit cards won't unlock the full suite of benefits for your basic business class seat, but the right card perks can restore some benefits.

For example, Delta's new basic business fares currently include access to Delta lounges through Jan. 18, 2027. After that date, basic business fares will no longer include Delta lounge access. You can still get lounge access in other ways, such as with a paid Delta SkyClub membership or the right credit card.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card is an option for anyone who wants Delta SkyClub access with a basic business fare. While this card won't directly replace all of the amenities you miss with a basic business fare, it offers two free checked bags on domestic Delta flights. This can offset the reduced baggage allowance for those flights. It also helps to alleviate the reduced mileage earnings with 3X miles on direct Delta purchases.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card offers airport lounge access, Delta status boost opportunities and an elevated return for certain business expenditures.

  • Access to airport lounges, including Amex Centurion lounges
  • Up to $610 in yearly statement credits
  • Delta elite status boosts (Enrollment required for select benefits mentioned)

  • High annual fee

  • Weak spending bonus categories compared to other business cards

United's basic business fares will only exclude access to its premium Polaris lounges; you'll still have access to United Club locations. That means the lounge access offered by a card like the United Club℠ Card (see rates and fees) or the United Club℠ Business Card isn't particularly useful with a basic business fare — but other cards' benefits, such as two free checked bags, can still be helpful.

If you're looking for a lower-fee option, the consumer United Quest℠ Card (see rates and fees) also offers a free first and second checked bag.

Booking with miles

Perhaps the most affordable way to avoid the restrictions of basic business and other unbundled fares is to book with miles. Outside of Delta and JetBlue, most airlines have not implemented the same level of basic economy restrictions to flights booked with miles.

While every airline has different rules, typically, when you book award travel with a major U.S.-based airline, you can take advantage of generous change or cancellation policies, with no or low fees. And award flights usually don't have additional lounge access restrictions.
