Overcast skies continued to loom over the Kerala landscape on Saturday, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of the possibility of strong winds till Sunday (August 9).

The IMD has issued an alert stating that strong surface winds with speed occasionally touching 40-50 kmph were likely to prevail over Kerala and the Lakshadweep islands till Sunday. In view of the IMD warning, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) urged the public to be on alert against the possibility of trees being uprooted, snapping branches and overhead power lines.

A low pressure area has formed over south West Bengal and adjoining northern parts of Odisha, and an associated cyclonic circulation persists 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards. Under their influence, strong northwesterly winds prevail over the Kerala and Lakshadweep region. Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph were likely to prevail along and off the Kerala coast till Sunday.

Neetha Gopal, director of the IMD Meteorological Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, said the winds and rainfall were expected to weaken by Sunday. Kerala is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall after Sunday.

Yellow alert

Most parts of Kerala received rainfall on Saturday, with the IMD forecasting moderate rainfall and gusty winds in a few places vis its three-hour Nowcast updates.

The weather agency has put northern districts Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall on Sunday.

On Saturday, all 14 districts were on alert for isolated heavy rainfall. Northern districts, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, and central districts, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam, were on orange alert.
