Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday (August 8) announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the family of a postgraduate student of Bangalore University who died on August 5, a week after she had sustained critical injuries in a road accident on the Jnanabharathi campus.
While ₹3 lakh will come from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, the rest will come from the university.
The deceased, Manasa, 23, a first-year postgraduate student in the Department of Visual Arts, was hit by a speeding autorickshaw on July 30, while crossing Gandhi Marg near the campus canteen after completing her examination. She suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Nagarabhavi, where she succumbed to her injuries on August 5 morning.
Following her death, hundreds of students and faculty members gathered under the banner ‘Justice for Manasa’, accusing the university administration of failing to ensure road safety.
