Motorcycle rider dies in collision with taxi on Osmeña Blvd.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 25-year-old motorcycle rider died after his vehicle collided with a taxi while traversing Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City early Monday morning, August 10.

The crash occurred at 3:57 a.m. at the corner of R. Landon Street.

The 25-year-old rider, a resident of Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City, was driving a Yamaha Aerox motorcycle, while the other vehicle was a Toyota Vios taxi driven by a 55-year-old man, a resident of V. Rama Avenue, Cebu City.

Collision at intersection

According to the initial investigation of the Cebu City Police Office Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), both vehicles were traveling along Osmeña Boulevard in opposite directions when the collision occurred.

The 55-year-old taxi driver was traveling from Fuente Osmeña Circle toward R. Landon Street. Upon reaching the intersection, he stopped for a red traffic signal.

When the signal turned green, the taxi proceeded to make a left turn toward R. Landon Street.

The initial investigation indicated that the taxi was already within the intersection and about to complete the turn when the 25-year-old motorcycle rider, who was traveling from the opposite direction, allegedly approached at a high rate of speed and continued straight crashing into the taxicab.

The motorcycle then collided with the left front portion of the taxi, causing the rider to be thrown from the motorcycle.

The 25-year-old rider sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene by a first responder, according to the police report.

Driver says he tried to give way

In a separate interview, the 55-year-old taxi driver said he was coming from Fuente Osmeña Circle and was about to turn left toward R. Landon Street.

He said he saw the motorcycle approaching at what he described as a high speed.

“Pag-abot nako diri, nakakita kos motor naghaguros,” he said.

(When I reached this area, I saw a speeding motorcycle.)

The driver said he stopped his vehicle to give way because he believed the motorcycle could still avoid the taxi.

“Mao nang nihunong ko para mag-give way kay pwede pa man unta makalikay ngadto. Pero tungod sa kakusog sa iyang dagan, di na gyud makaya,” he said.

(That is why I stopped to give way because he could have evaded it. But because of his high speed, he could not stop the motorcycle.)

He also said his taxi had already entered the intersection but he said he did not proceed with the turn further after seeing the motorcycle.

The taxi driver said he was heading toward the pier area to look for passengers when the collision occurred.

As of this writing, the 55-year-old taxi driver remains under TEU custody while authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
