Minglanilla beaches ‘temporarily closed’ after teen drowned on Sunday
CEBU CITY, Philippines – Acting Mayor Lheslen Enad has ordered a temporary suspension of all swimming activities along the coastlines of Barangays Tungkop, Tungkil, and Calajoan after a 17-year-old boy drowned on Sunday, August 9.
The victim, a resident of Barangay Banawa, Cebu City, died after being swept away by strong waves while swimming at a beach resort in Barangay Tungkop, police said.

Warned before tragedy
According to the report, the victim and two other minors, aged 12 and 13, were among roughly 20 people attending a youth group event at the resort after their community’s fiesta.
Upon arrival, a resort caretaker explicitly warned the group against swimming due to high tide and strong waves, police said.
Despite the warnings, the three minors entered the water.
Swept by current
The strong current swept away all three minors, according to the report.
The two younger minors managed to swim back to shore and were rescued by a companion, police said.
The 17-year-old failed to resurface.
Frantic rescue
Responding police, rescue teams, and private individuals immediately conducted search and retrieval operations, police said.
The victim was recovered at around 2:35 p.m., roughly an hour after he went missing in the water, the report showed.
Rescuers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on scene and continued the procedure while transporting him to Minglanilla District Hospital.
Declared dead at hospital
The attending physician attempted to resuscitate the victim upon arrival at the hospital at around 3:30 p.m., but he did not respond to treatment.
He was declared dead at 3:40 p.m. on August 9.
As of this writing, the local government unit has not announced when the temporary suspension will be lifted.
Minglanilla is a municipality in the Province of Cebu, which is located 15 kilometers south of Cebu City.
