Meralco rates to dip by P0.0428/kWh in August

MANILA, Philippines — Customers of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will see a modest reduction in their bills this August, thanks to the initial implementation of the P9.5-billion refund ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

In a media briefing on Monday, the power distributor said power rates would dip by P0.0428 per kilowatt hour (kWh), bringing the overall rate for a typical household to P14.7833 from P14.8261 per kWh in July.

This translates to around a P9 reduction in the electricity bills of residential customers consuming 200 kWh.

The Pangilinan-led group will begin implementing the multibillion-peso refund this month, equivalent to P0.5861per kWh for residential customers. The refund period will run for six months.

Based on its decision dated July 31, ERC ordered the country’s biggest power distributor to refund the equivalent rate of P0.3449 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) within six months as a separate line item in consumers’ electricity bills.

This decision came after Meralco filed two separate applications for refund last year and early 2026. /pai
