BonChon operator makes switch under govt’s retail power program

MANILA, Philippines — More businesses are taking advantage of the government’s program that allows qualified consumers to choose their own electricity supplier, with Scottland Food Group—the local master franchise behind Korean fried chicken chain BonChon, joining in the shift.

Scottland Food Group has tapped retail electricity supplier EvoEnergi for this move.

“By sourcing electricity through a licensed retail electricity supplier, the company is expected to benefit from more competitive generation rates, helping reduce one of its largest operating expenses,” EvoEnergi said in a statement Monday.

The deal covers 17 facilities with a combined contrated demand of about 1.8 megawatts.

Meanwhile, EvoEnergi said the government’s decision to expand the retail competition and open access (RCOA) program entices “broader market participation.”

Moreover, RCOA lets consumers using at least 100 kW a month buy cheaper power from retailers instead of their local supplier. This was a big cut from the previous threshold of 500 kW.

Still, the retail aggregation program lets households and smaller consumers in a common area pool demand to meet the threshold.

The country marked its first two residential groups that switched under RCOA last June. /pai
