On May 4, 2026, a tsunami of sorts swept across the State of Tamil Nadu and one man crested the wave – C. Joseph Vijay. An actor, once known as ‘Illaya Thalapathy’, or young commander, amongst his fans, he transitioned a decade ago to the title Thalapathy (commander), a moniker prescient enough, for he did lead his people through one of the most historic debut political appearances in the history of elections in India. In 2026, he was the hero of a full-length feature film starring the Dravidian duopoly and vanquished them.

Born on June 22, 1974, into a family deeply entrenched in the Tamil film industry (his father is film director Chandrasekhar, his mother Shoba was a singer), Mr. Vijay grew up in the narrow lanes of Kodambakkam in Chennai - a city he led a victory march in, nearly half a century later. Starting with child roles, he went on to play leading roles and starred in about 70 films over a period of nearly 30 years, growing to amass a gargantuan fan base, and emerging as one of the country’s highly-paid actors.

He dropped out of a B.Sc course in order to continue with a film career that was picking up steam. Early romantic hits such as Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, Thulladha Manamum Thullum in the late 90s, and in 2000, Kushi and Priyamanavale helped build his fanbase.

The subsequent years propelled him to even greater stardom, as his films, including Friends, Badri, Shahjahan, and the remake Ghilli, broke box office records.

In the next couple of decades, his stardom was cemented with a string of successful movies and a characteristic reclusiveness. He seldom appeared in public events or even movie/music launches, unlike other stars, and that ostensibly increased the aura around him. His fan base grew cultic during these decades, with raging wars being fought online by the foot soldiers of this commander, intolerant of any criticism of his films. This was the period of more blockbuster hits - Thuppakki, Mersal, Sarkar, Master, Beast, Leo, and The Greatest of All Time - which built him into a larger-than-life vanquisher of evil, who was also among the best dancers on screen.

The first foreshadow of a possible political future came way back in 2013, with his film Thalaivaa. While a hit across the country, the film’s tagline ‘Time to lead’ and interviews his father gave about Mr. Vijay’s political ambitions irked the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and she banned the release of the film in the State. The tagline was eventually dropped and the film released. Thalaivaa also set the metric for Mr. Vijay’s anti-establishment screen personna, a thread he went on to develop in films such as Mersal, Kathi, Sarkar, Master, and fully exploited after launching his political party – the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in February 2024. He offered himself as the ‘clean alternative’ and the agent of ‘change’, immediately targeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and positing the election battle as one between the DMK and the TVK, which indeed, it turned out to be. He was also lucky to emerge at a time when fatigue with Dravidianism had risen.

Once his entry into the political arena was a reality, the crowds started coming organically, for his rallies. His political rallies ran into hot water, particularly the Karur rally, as 41 people were crushed to death in a stampede on 27 September 2025.

Controversies dogged his personal life as a divorce petition filed by his wife Sangeetha was leaked strategically before the elections, and his swansong Jana Nayagan was stalled from release. But none of this turned out to be a setback for the actor as he trumpeted from the pulpit he had been granted by his fans: “Your Vijay will be standing in all the 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu.” His strategy of appealing to children to get their parents to vote for the TVK seems to have worked, producing a momentous victory for the party.

Styling himself on the charismatic MGR, Mr. Vijay seems to have gone much farther than the yesteryear hero-turned-politician he was inspired by. While MGR’s dramatic win in 1977 came after years of being involved in politics, Mr. Vijay has managed an impressive performance as a complete novice, sweeping up an unprecedented 34.9% of the votes on political debut.

C. Joseph Vijay has already created history, with his defeat of the two Dravidian behemoths, but how he keeps his promises to his fans, to be the harbinger of change, will be an interesting journey to follow.
