According to Ukrinform, the president made this announcement on Facebook following a meeting attended by, among others, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mykhailo Drapatyi, the Chief of the General Staff, Ihor Skybiuk, and the acting Minister of Defense, Yevhenii Khmara.

“We resolved important military issues today. Personnel proposals were discussed. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Mykhailo Drapatyi, in coordination with Ihor Skybiuk and Yevhenii Khmara, proposed a vision for changes. Some decisions have already been prepared, and more will follow,” Zelensky stated.

He noted that he had discussed the situation on the front lines with military officials and measures to reinforce key sectors, particularly in the Donetsk region.

“I am grateful to all the units achieving tangible results in defending our positions and destroying the occupiers in the Slovyansk, Kostiantynivka, and Dobropillia areas. I am grateful to the units of the Airborne Assault Forces for their active operations in designated areas – we agreed on steps that can provide our troops with greater operational capabilities,” the president noted.

According to him, the meeting also addressed the implementation of long-range sanctions against Russia, as well as “middle strikes.” Zelensky noted that some operations had been adjusted and new ones approved.

An important topic of the meeting, as Zelensky said, was air defense and the need to protect frontline and border towns and communities, regional centers, and the capital.

“I expect Ukraine’s diplomatic team to deliver the results in securing our military capabilities that are objectively needed. The issue of air defense for Ukraine must be at the top of the agenda for every leader and every country that can help,” the president emphasized.

As previously reported, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the new military leadership is preparing to modernize the Ukrainian Defense Forces. This process must be coordinated to prevent Russia from exploiting the changes.

On July 21, in a statement, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Mykhailo Drapatyi would become the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and also said that the structure of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine would be reorganized, and emphasized that during his meeting with Oleksandr Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov, they discussed “future service arrangements and the proper handover of duties.”

Later, decrees were published on the website of the President of Ukraine appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi as commander-in-chief and Ihor Skybiuk as chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as dismissing Oleksandr Syrskyi and Andrii Hnatov.
