Several protesters were injured in Jharkhand’s Ranchi after the police lathi-charged them and fired tear gas during a march to the Assembly. The protesters organised the march on the 17th day of their demonstration against the alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive examinations for government jobs.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the police action against the protesters and urged the Jharkhand government to listen to them and resolve their grievances. The Congress is a member of the ruling Mahagathbandhan alliance in the state, headed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Public Service Commission’s former chairperson L Khiangte was arrested by the state Criminal Investigation Department in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Read on.

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were detained while protesting outside Soren’s home. This came a day after the Jharkhand government agreed to cancel three examinations after talks with two delegations of protesting students.

The government also agreed to involve the Enforcement Directorate in an inquiry into alleged financial irregularities linked to the 14th civil services examination.

However, the talks failed to resolve the students’ key demands for cancellation of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission-Combined Graduate Level examination results. Read on.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the deadlock in Parliament will continue until Union Home Minister Amit Shah addresses allegations of the police using excessive force against youth protesters in Delhi on July 20. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Shah was ready for a detailed discussion if the Opposition allows Parliament to function without disruptions.

The Monsoon Session ends on August 13. Amid repeated adjournments, several bills are yet to be listed, according to reports.

The Lok Sabha has passed a bill to set up a central oversight body for appointing the chairpersons and members of the 16 tribunals in the country. The body, named the National Tribunals Commission, will also review the performance of chairpersons and members of tribunals, as well as address complaints against them, according to the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026.
