A Star Wars fan spent £9,000 building his dream Star Wars spaceship in his garden – but has admitted that his fiancée had slight reservations about the unique project.

Chester Walsh, 29, has been an avid watcher of the space-themed media franchise since he was a young boy, and in June last year got to work on creating his own replica of its famous spacecraft.

The project, which took three months, saw Chester produce a seven-metre-long and three-metre-wide spaceship which he fondly named 'The Halikon'.

Chester, who works as a prop maker, described himself as a 'big Star Wars fan' who had been crafting 'this idea for a good couple of years prior'.

However, he added that his fiancée was initially sceptical of the rather unconventional garden feature – and was fearful it 'would look a bit more intimidating or overpowering in the garden'.

Fortunately, Chester explained that she is now 'happy' with the overall result, and that while it is 'not a subtle thing, we have a decent-sized garden so you don't have to look at it'.

The large structure consists of a frame covered with plywood and some rubber, with fibreglass used for the outside detailing.

Of all the components used to build the ship, the concrete base proved to be the most expensive – while the added costs of the supplies and decorations saw the overall cost reach a staggering £9,000.

'Everyone thinks it is very unique and cool,' he said. 'None of them have asked me to build one in their garden yet but I have been asked to decorate some spare rooms.

'I am a bit of a perfectionist so I am not 100 per cent happy, but overall I enjoyed building it and it is a nice thing to have. There are just minor details I would like to refine over time.'

Inside, Chester keeps monitors and a PlayStation, alongside a seating area which can be turned into a single bed for friends to stay.

He proudly named his unique creation 'The Halikon' as a fond tribute to the since-closed hotel in Florida which provided an immersive Star Wars experience.

'There were a lot of things to keep my mind occupied as there were always problems to solve,' he added.

'I had a lot of creative freedom with it being my own design so I could adjust things for convenience if I needed to rather than follow any strict plan.'

Chester started going to comic conventions aged 17 and made costumes from his favourite films in his spare time.

Two years ago, he decided to 'take the leap' and quit his day job at a law firm in order to commit to making art and props full time.

As well as his replica spaceship, he has made costumes including a human Shrek costume and Ben 10.

His favourite things to make are flexible urethane rubber costume arms, which look like metal, and plush wire-frame poseable cats.

'When people see me at conventions, it makes them remember something nostalgic that they forgot. I get quite a lot of joy bringing that smile to people's faces,' he added.
