The teacher who reportedly included a controversial question about V.D. Savarkar in an Independence Day quiz was suspended on the basis of the inquiry report, General Education Minister V. Shamsudheen said here on Monday (August 10).

The inquiry report submitted to the government found that the teacher who prepared the question had erred, the Minister said. He added that further investigation would be conducted into the incident.

The Independence Day quiz was not a programme included in the official education calendar, Mr. Shamsudheen said, stressing that teachers were required to strictly follow prescribed rules.

Responding to criticism that action had been taken only against the teacher, the Minister said strict action would be taken against senior officials if the enquiry found that they had committed lapses. “Anyone found responsible will face action, irrespective of how high their position is,” he said.

The Minister said it was unacceptable that the content for educational programmes was shaped according to the personal interests of individuals working in the government system. Teachers are expected to discharge their responsibilities with discipline and accountability, he added.

The Minister announced that a special package would be introduced to address educational issues in Kasaragod district.
