An 18-year-old girl was run over by an express train while attempting to cross the tracks near the Chromepet railway station on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as S. Rajashri of Chromepet. She had recently joined a private college at Potheri and was heading to the institution to attend an orientation programme when the accident occurred between the Pallavaram and Chromepet railway stations. According to the Tambaram Government Railway Police (GRP), Rajashri left home around 7.30 a.m. and took a shortcut through a level crossing to reach the railway station. When she attempted to cross the tracks despite the gates being closed, she was run over by the train bound for Egmore.
An Inspector said the gatekeeper witnessed the accident and alerted the Pallavaram Station Master, who informed the police. The Tambaram GRP registered a case and launched an investigation. The police recovered the body and sent it to a government hospital for a post-mortem.
