Face it, we all have paperwork that we need to destroy. At more than £100, the Powershred LX70 from Fellowes isn’t the cheapest shredder around, but this P-4 powerhouse can reduce a stated 11 sheets of A4 simultaneously to 4 x 40mm nothingness at around three metres per minute, over its five-minute duty cycle.

Now, while this a relatively low runtime, it does cool-down in just half an hour, so you’ll be back in business in next to no time.

Featuring an 18l bin, there’s no continuous auto-feed and I found the 11 sheets per pass to be a bit on the optimistic side, but able to handle paperclips, staples and credit cards too, this is a highly efficient paper shredder.

A Mini-Cut model with a P-4 security level, the Powershred M6 from Fellowes can reduce a sheet of A4 (@70gsm) into near-confetti in next to no time, or up to six sheets simultaneously if the spec is to be believed. Shredding docs down to paper particles of 4 x 12mm at a rate of 3 metres per minute, the 6M features a 5-minute duty cycle before needing to cool and boasts a copious bin capacity of 13l.

Including a safety lock and an anti-jam reverse function, it can also take on credit cards, staples and paper clips with aplomb.

Though noisy at 70dB, the 6M is both efficient and affordable. And, yes, suspense over, it can shred six sheets at once.

Offering a greater sheet capacity and a bigger bin than the Fellowes 6M above, although a lower P-3 level of shredding security, if you’re in the market for a machine that can tackle eight sheets of 70/80gsm A4 at once, alongside attached staples and paperclips, reducing it all to 5 x 42mm of unreadable rubbish in its 15l bin, then the ludicrous low-priced Rexel Momentum X308 Cross-Cut is for you.

On the downside, its duty cycle is only 3 minutes, after which it can overheat, plus it can only handle 1.8 metres per minute compared to the 6M’s 3 metres per minute.

But if simultaneous shred and bin capacity are key, then for a fiver under 50 quid, you can’t go wrong.

Moving up the price spectrum to more mid-range, the Momentum X410 Cross Cut from Rexel is, as the name probably suggested, a Cross Cut variant that offers a P-4 level of security shredding, which can quite comfortably shred up to 8 (the stated 10 made running slower) sheets of standard 70/80gsm A4 pages to particles of 4 x 28mm at a rate of 1.8 metres per minute.

With a duty cycle of 6 minutes and a cool-down time of 60, the X410 can tackle paperclips (up to 0.9 mm) and staples, all of which is then stored in its more-than-generous 23l bin.

Running at 62dB, it’s reasonably quiet too, so for home shredding requirements on a much bigger scale, it’s ideal.

Perfect for the home office, this P-4 option, the Powershred KX50 Cross Cut, from Fellowes is similar in price to the Rexel above, but with a smaller bin and a shorter run-time at 5 minutes, which may sound like negatives. However, and this is a huge difference, while the X410 takes an hour to cool down, this little beauty cools its shredding heels in a mere 30 minutes.

Stated as able to destroy up to 9 sheets of A4 simultaneously, in practice this seemed to put a bit of a strain on the motor, so you may want to stick to fewer to ensure longevity.

Quite the looker, as far as these things go, the Leitz IQ Slim is a Cross Cut with a P-4 rating, ripping up to 10 sheets of 70-80gsm A4 to tiny bits over irs six-minutes duty cycle. Packing a voluminous 23l bin and able to decimate staples and paperclips too, it’s both beauty and beast.

With a cool-down time of some 60 minutes, as seems to be the way with all shredders, the stated sheet capacity appeared a little ambitious and, even with the Leitz’s anti-jam tech, 10 sheets at once often seemed like a sheet or two too far.

Otherwise utterly efficient in all areas, the Leitz is perfect for the (reasonably) busy home office.

While I said you’ll probably not need to go above a P-4, take a look at this: this is the IQ OptioMax Home Office 225, a Micro Cut model with a P-5 rating that, like in the name, is good enough for the actual Home Office.

Handling up to 6 sheets of A4 at once at a rate of 1.8 metres per minute, it has a duty cycle of a whopping 20 minutes and a cool-down time of 60 minutes, and comes capable of dealing with paperclips and staples, all deposited at 2 x 15mm into its 15l bin.

The downside? At £215 it’s expensive, but if absolute secure shredding is required for your sensitive documents, it’s worth every penny.
