The Spider-Man phenomenon has reached a new high in India. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially become the highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country, surpassing the lifetime haul of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water and giving Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios a new benchmark for imported releases.
According to Sony Pictures, Brand New Day had earned $52.8 million, roughly ₹440 crore, in India after its second weekend. The film added around $10.6 million during the weekend alone, pushing it past Avatar: The Way of Water, which had previously held the record.
The milestone caps an extraordinary run for the fourth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film. Released in India on July 30, one day ahead of its US release, the film benefited from enormous advance bookings and strong demand across English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions. It also crossed the ₹500 crore gross mark in India by its 12th day, according to domestic trade reports.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows Peter Parker after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which left him erased from the memories of everyone who once knew him. The new film jumps forward several years, with Peter having devoted himself entirely to crime-fighting while facing a new threat and unexpected changes to his powers.
Holland returns as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. The cast also includes Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, Michael Mando and Sadie Sink.
The film’s Indian performance is particularly striking given the scale of the previous record. Avatar: The Way of Water had become India’s biggest Hollywood grosser after earning approximately ₹477.5 crore gross, while Avengers: Endgame had also crossed the ₹400 crore mark. Brand New Day has now moved beyond both films in the gross rankings.
The record adds another major milestone to Brand New Day‘s theatrical run. The film has also crossed $1 billion internationally within 12 days, placing it among the fastest films ever to reach that figure outside North America.
With its second-weekend momentum still intact and the ₹500 crore gross milestone already behind it, the question remians: just how far can the web-slinger stretch this record?
