An earthquake has rattled the Bay of Plenty this evening.

The magnitude 4.1 quake struck at 6.25pm, about 15km west of Whakatāne, at a depth of 5km.

GeoNet listed the shaking as light, with more than 1700 people reporting they had felt the quake within minutes.
