A 20-year-old woman died and a man was rescued after the two jumped into an irrigation canal near Vendra village in Palakoderu mandal of West Godavari district on Monday (August 10, 2026), the police said.

The parents of T. Sandeep Kumar, 22, who is pursuing a Chartered Accountancy course, had recently accepted his proposal to marry G. Lalithambika of Bhimavaram, who worked in an aqua processing factory.

“The girl had reportedly appealed to Sandeep to cancel their marriage proposal, citing some health issues. Later, Sandeep proposed that they end their lives together, leading to the incident,” said Bhimavaram Rural Circle Inspector V. Jagadeeswara Rao.

The two jumped into the canal on Monday. Ms. Lalithambika’s body was found in it on Tuesday.

Sandeep was rescued by residents during the search on Monday and is being treated at a hospital in Bhimavaram. “His health condition is out of danger, and he has registered his statement,” Mr. Jagadeeswara Rao said.

Sandeep is a native of Kumudavalli village in Palakoderu mandal. Ms. Lalithambika had been staying with her relatives, having lost her parents a few years ago.

The police have registered a case and the investigation is on. The body has been sent to the government hospital in Bhimavaram for post-mortem.
