Former Ballydoyle galloper Appeared will step out for the first time under race conditions for new trainer Bjorn Baker at Newcastle on Thursday.

A last-start winner at The Curragh in Ireland last October, Appeared was subsequently purchased by Darby Racing at the Newmarket horses in training sale and brought to the Sydney stable of Baker to continue his career.

The son of Justify will contest Thursday’s Jockeys Celebration Day Class 1 & Maiden Plate (1880m) with Dylan Gibbons taking the ride.

“He’s a progressive sort of horse and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do at Newcastle,” Baker said of Appeared.

“He’s had two trials to get ready for the 1880m first-up and he’s heading in the right direction.

“He wasn’t beaten far at all in his second trial, and all looks good for a prominent run on Thursday.”

Baker will also have the Darby Racing runner Lego Master going around at Newcastle in the 4WD Tours R Us Class 1 Handicap (1400m) with Kerrin McEvoy booked for the mount.

Lego Master was stepping out for his fifth start when resuming from a spell with a victory at Illawarra Grange.

“He’s a horse that had shown ability with placings in three of his first four starts,” said Baker.

“He trialled well before resuming and it was good to see him break through and get the maiden out of the way.

“He’s drawn a good gate and there’s no reason he can’t be right in the finish again.”

Baker will have one other runner starting at Newcastle in the shape of Nafanua, which Gibbons will ride in the Destination Port Stephens Cup Benchmark 64 Handicap (1250m).

Nafanua is a mare by Tagaloa and resumed from a spell with a third at Illawarra Grange behind Capture Me.

“She managed to win her maiden at the end of her last preparation at Cowra,” Baker said.

“She had the two trials before resuming and ran well and she’s come through that run in good order.

“She has a wide gate to contend with but should run well again with any luck.”
