Two men were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Principal District Sessions Court at Tiruvallur on Wednesday for murdering a security guard during a robbery in 2020.

The convicts were identified as Vijaykumar alias Vijay, 23, of Tirunindravur, and Suresh, 19. According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 24, 2020, near a newly constructed toll plaza on the 400 Feet Road.

The duo allegedly waylaid a lorry driver, threatened him with a knife and robbed him of his mobile phone and cash. When security guard Venkatesan attempted to stop them, the accused attacked him on the head with an iron rod, killing him.

A case was registered at the Muthapudupet police station and the two accused were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. After completing the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet before the court.

After finding the accused guilty, the court sentenced both to life imprisonment under Section 302 read with Section 34 of the IPC and imposed a fine of ₹25,000 each. In default of payment, they will undergo an additional year of simple imprisonment.
