HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Pentagon created a digital portal designed to give contractors, startups, investors and universities a more direct path into the Golden Dome missile defense program, one of the government’s most closely held defense initiatives.
The “Golden Dome for America Ecosystem Hub,” announced Tuesday at the Space & Missile Defense Symposium, is intended to provide companies with a channel to submit concepts and gain access to unclassified information about the program’s technology needs, even as most of the architecture remains classified.
“We have tried to make our doors as wide open as possible,” Gen. Michael Guetlein, who leads the Golden Dome program, said Aug. 11 during a fireside discussion.
Guetlein said he has already met individually with more than 500 companies to discuss technologies that could contribute to the proposed homeland missile defense architecture.
Golden Dome envisions a layered network of sensors, command-and-control systems and interceptors designed to defend the United States against ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missiles and other aerial threats.
The hub reflects a broader effort by the Pentagon to bring commercial technology and private capital into the program. One challenge has been that many of Golden Dome’s technical discussions take place at high classification levels, making it difficult for startups and newer entrants to understand where the government intends to invest. While the portal does not remove those classification barriers, it provides an unclassified starting point, allowing companies to submit ideas before formal solicitations are released.
“There is now a website you can go to to do business with Golden Dome,” Guetlein said. “It’s going to ask you about your ideas, and then we have a group on the back side that is vetting your ideas.”
He said the program has established a screening process for prospective participants and created a security team that will help companies protect intellectual property and information technology systems.
“We have a security group that will actually come work with you to secure your IP and secure your networks, to teach you how the threat is going to manifest itself and how to protect your intellectual property and your results against that,” Guetlein said.
Guetlein said the program has created a shared data environment for government, approved contractors and academia.
“We are bringing all of our data together and exposing our data to academia, industry and government agencies at whatever classification level you are cleared for, and saying: Come play with our data,” he said.
The environment includes a data sandbox for analytics and a separate artificial intelligence sandbox for companies developing AI applications, he said, along with security tools designed to safeguard sensitive information.
Data integration has emerged as one of the central technical challenges for Golden Dome. The planned architecture depends on combining information from military, commercial and government sensors into a common operational picture that can rapidly identify threats and coordinate interceptors. The Pentagon hopes developers can build software and analytical tools against a common data architecture rather than isolated systems.
The Pentagon said the hub is intended to encourage broader participation and competition.
An acquisition model that brings in commercial space firms is already being used for Golden Dome’s space-based interceptor program. The Space Force is requiring competing contractors to invest their own capital during early development before becoming eligible for larger government awards tied to technical milestones. Guetlein said 12 teams are developing prototypes.
Several prime contractors have already assembled teams that pair established defense companies with commercial space firms. Northrop Grumman is working with satellite manufacturer Apex on space-based interceptors, while Raytheon has partnered with Rocket Lab. Guetlein has said such partnerships will be necessary if the program is to produce large numbers of systems at costs the government can sustain.
Guetlein said the program has two companies under contract to conduct supply-chain risk analysis. One is examining supplier networks several tiers deep to identify bottlenecks and vulnerabilities, while the other is looking for alternative sources of supply to improve resilience.
