The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed an ₹824-crore underground sewerage project covering Kalapatti, parts of Vilankurichi, and parts of Saravanampatti, with an 411-km sewer network planned for nine wards.

The project, estimated to cost ₹824 crore, will cover wards 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 21, 22, and 23, and is expected to provide underground sewer connections to around 33,637 households.

Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared and submitted to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). “We are working on tying up funds for the project under the Special Infrastructure Component of the Central Finance Commission,” he said.

According to the project proposal, the sewerage system has been designed based on the topography of the areas and projected population. The population is estimated at 1,30,264 in 2030, with further projections made for 2045 and 2060.

Based on the projected population, sewage generation has been estimated at 13.37 million litres a day (MLD) for the base period, 17.66 MLD for the intermediate period and 23.09 MLD for the ultimate period.

The proposed sewerage network will comprise 411 km of pipelines and 15,777 manholes. Ten sewage pumping stations and five sewage lifting stations are proposed to collect and convey sewage from the areas.

The collected sewage will be transported to a proposed sewage treatment plant at Ondipudur. The treatment plant will have a capacity of 17.66 MLD, and the treated effluent is proposed to be discharged into the Noyyal.

At present, underground sewerage works are under way in four packages covering different parts of the city. The works in Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur have been completed, while the Chinnavedampatti–Saravanampatti package has reached 44% progress. The Ondipudur package is around 70% complete, while works covering Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Thudiyalur and Kavundampalayam have reached 42% completion.

“Once this project is taken up and completed, the entire city will be connected to the underground sewerage system. This will help prevent sewage from entering waterbodies,” the Commissioner said.
