Large brokerages like ICICI Securities, Groww and Angel One will start showing indicative close on their websites by August 14, amid uptick in the adoption of closing auction session (CAS), said Chairperson of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Tuhin Kanta Pandey.

“I think there is Zerodha and Upstox, which have already done it on their website; they will do it in apps too. The other important Qualified Stock Brokers (QSBs) like ICICI Securities, Groww, and Angel One are big and they will also start showing their indicative prices by 14th, and they will also bring it in apps,” Mr. Pandey said adding that CAS -- a new globally consistent closing share price calculation mechanism –- needs to increase in adoption.

This became important because buyers were unable to meet sellers on the first day of launching CAS, reducing trading volumes and triggering a sudden uptick in index prices during the final few minutes of trading.

Mr. Pandey reiterated that these were teething troubles as algorithms and systems used by traders and brokers were made for the earlier Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) method.

Expecting participation to increase in CAS, as it is a transparent pricing method, he said SEBI had observed that mutual fund participation rate has now drastically increased to 25% compared to 5-7% earlier.

CAS, which became effective from August 3, is a 20-minute session which will be held between 3:15 pm and 3:35 pm to determine the closing prices of stocks under CAS. During this session, the exchange will match buy and sell orders to determine the equilibrium price through auctions and not by averaging recent trades. Most global markets, including the New York Stock Exchange (and the London Stock Exchange already use this method

On losses incurred by retail derivative traders, he said the levels had shrank to ₹97,000 crore this year from ₹1 lakh crore last year. A study reviewing the state of retail derivative trading following the introduction of measures aimed at curbing such losses would be released within eight to ten days, according to him.
