Daily electricity demand exceeded 270 million units in the State as day temperatures have been consistently high due to the El Nino impact, prompting the Energy Department to make necessary procurement from power exchanges and the Term-Ahead Market, whenever the situation warrants.

Taking stock of the power generation and supply in a review meeting at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar directed the officials to focus on generation and supply, in line with the rising electricity demand. He emphasised the need to anticipate a likely spurt in demand in order to ramp up generation and purchase power from external sources, and thereby ensure uninterrupted supply to all the residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial sectors.

He also ordered that renewable power generation be increased to the extent possible to ease the burden on thermal units.

The Minister stressed the need to pay special attention to the smooth operation of power generation units and instructed the officials to do preventive maintenance to avoid technical failures.

AP-Transco Joint Managing Director G. Surya Sai Praveenchand and other top officials of the power utilities were present.
