Given how many CD Projekt has on the way, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about Project Sirius, a mysterious multiplayer title set in The Witcher universe. Unfortunately, it seems that development is not proceeding smoothly. According to Kotaku, nine employees were let go from the Project Sirius team this week, with another nine moved elsewhere within CD Projekt. The company is now taking "a broader shift in development strategy," according to Kotaku's report.

For those who don’t remember Project Sirius, CD Projekt announced the game on Oct. 4, 2022, as part of an update to investors. CD Projekt Red Boston, which previously absorbed The Molasses Flood, is working on it. The Molasses Flood developed the 2016 roguelike game The Flame in the Flood and the 2020 survival action game Drake Hollow.

CD Projekt’s Adam Kiciński said Project Sirius “will be set in The Witcher universe, but it differs from our past releases in that it targets a much broader audience. Sirius will provide both single-player and multiplayer gameplay.” When it was announced in 2022, the game was in pre-production, with more than 60 developers involved.

Unfortunately, the next news about Project Sirius came in 2023 when CD Projekt announced that it had restarted the project from scratch while laying off 29 developers. At the time, the company’s chief financial officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, said the following about the move: “I’m aware that it’s not great to hear from a company that the project is being re-evaluated. But at the same time, in order to stay innovative we must experiment and be brave when trying new paths, and to stay in control and keep the right course, especially with a project that is new to us in terms of design, developed by a new studio in our family.” He added, “We need to keep evaluating the situation as we move along. It’s better to cut costs early – and even restart if needed – than to carry on.”

Kotaku reported the project had been going “relatively well recently, following changes made this past spring” — that is, until these latest cuts. CD Projekt Red hired acclaimed Destiny 2 developer Kwan Perng as the game’s lead writer this past May.

Project Sirius was announced alongside Project Polaris, which was described as the first game in a new Witcher trilogy. The first of these is The Witcher 4, which was announced at the Game Awards in December 2024. The company said it plans to release this trilogy over a six-year span, which seems quite ambitious.

As for other Witcher projects, there’s also The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past (a DLC expansion that’s out in 2027) and a remake of the first Witcher game. After years of fixing Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red is working on a sequel titled Project Orion. Lastly, there’s Project Hadar. “Hadar is a codename for a third, entirely distinct IP, created from scratch within CDPR,” the company said. “The project is in the earliest stages of the creative process, which means we are not developing any game yet, but working exclusively on the foundation for this new setting.” With so many initiatives in the works, hopefully Project Sirius doesn’t end up completely lost in the shuffle.
