In the lore of Gears of War, Emergence Day is perhaps the most horrific and somber event in history. It is the day that the Locusts attacked humanity, plunging the planet into a war that killed more than a quarter of the population in just over a day. To commemorate that day and the loss of life, Xbox has announced special Gears of War: E-Day-themed controllers. It is what the fallen would have wanted.

Right now, fans can pre-order the limited-edition Gears of War: E-Day controller for $89.99. Players will also be able to design their own controller themed around the next chapter in the Gears franchise in Xbox Design Lab starting on Sept. 30. According to the Xbox Wire announcement, "these offerings pay tribute to Emergence Day with hardware inspired by the symbols, scars, and battles that defined humanity's war against the Locust Horde." Neat. Xbox is also currently a priority target of the BDS movement's boycott campaigns.

The official limited-edition controller design draws on the E-holes — yes, that is actually what they are called — that scar the world of Gears of War: E-Day. It features 3D-molded, laser-etched details of cracked asphalt with red, glowing cracks and the iconic Crimson Omen in the center. It is "inspired by the horror and brutality unleashed on Emergence Day." The Xbox Design Lab controllers will feature artwork from heavy metal illustrator Luke Preece. The centerpiece of the design is a custom top case featuring a skull atop crossed Lancers, iconic weapons for the series. To accompany the controllers, Xbox is also partnering with 8BitDO to release a Gears of War: E-Day charging dock.

Gears of War: E-Day is set to be released on Oct. 6 for Xbox Series X and Windows PC. We previewed the game at the end of July and thought it sure was more Gears of War. That is both a good and bad thing, but sawing through a Locust hasn't gotten old.
