SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Yonhap) -- Daewoo Engineering and Construction (E&C) Co. said Thursday it has been selected as a preferred bidder for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Papua New Guinea.

The South Korean construction company secured the preferred bidder status from TotalEnergies, the lead operator of the Papua LNG project, for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) of the project's central processing facility and well pads in the South Pacific island nation.

The selection comes four years after Daewoo E&C was awarded the first and second phases of the project's front-end engineering design work in 2022.

The LNG project, one of the largest resource development projects in Papua New Guinea, is aimed at extracting natural gas from the Elk-Antelope gas fields and producing about 6 million tons of LNG annually.

If finalized, Daewoo E&C will be solely responsible for the entire EPCC process for the central processing facility and related infrastructure, which will process and treat natural gas produced from the fields before supplying it to an LNG liquefaction plant near Port Moresby, the country's capital.
