Modern Asian$$
Swish dumplings and share plates in a stylish art deco treasure.
This loosely Cantonese diner run by the Commune Group (Tokyo Tina, Firebird, Studio Amaro) is geared for a good time. The footloose menu favours punchy flavours over austerity, kicking off with sesame prawn toast cubes dabbed with fluffy lemon butter, and crisp fingers of eggplant splashed in black vinegar.
Other winning dishes include crowd-pleasing Sichuan-style chicken and prawn wontons, and a generous tangle of XO egg noodles boosted with salty pancetta and plump prawns. Wine is mostly Australian from hot producers while cocktails are quirky: an “atypical” margarita tricked up with coriander and jalapeno.
The handful of desserts includes a refreshingly tart green apple sorbet with matcha granita. Not everything hits – a signature beef and black bean hotplate lacked sizzle and spice – but savvy ordering makes this a reliable stayer for mates, dates and group celebrations.
Good to know: Weekend lunchtimes offer 90-minute bottomless yum cha sessions.
