Inviting local boozer doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but keeps it spinning smoothly.
People, we have a chip problem: the hand-cut fries at Bobbie Peels are so good you’ll be fighting your opposite to the final crumb. They’re just one example of food punching above its weight here.
Other surprises include a vegan, gluten-free Sunday roast that actually tastes delicious; mussels made moreish in a simple white wine sauce; and zucchini mafaldine pasta with a lacy parmesan crisp perched on top. It’s pub grub meets bistro creativity.
If the superlative selection of indie beer is to be expected, the approach to wine is a pleasant surprise. The list is dotted with hard-to-find gems, and on Wednesdays every bottle is 20 per cent off. Pubs are for the people, and owners Phil Gijsbers and Neil Mills clearly see themselves as custodians of a tradition they revere and feel confident to refresh.
Best for: Neighbourhood comfort with a pinch of finesse.
