NM Mallorca drops two spots in Asean Age Group Chess Championships

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Rising Cebuano woodpusher and Lapu-Lapu City native National Master (NM) Marquis Angelo Mallorca saw his impressive run halted after seven rounds of the ongoing 24th Asean+ Age-Group Chess Championships 2026 in Singapore.

Mallorca suffered a setback against India’s Chauhan Adkiv Singh in the seventh round of the Under-14 standard competition, snapping a four-round unbeaten run that produced three wins and a draw.

The loss dropped Mallorca two spots from 11th to 14th place with two rounds remaining. He now has 4.5 points and will need a strong finish in the final two rounds to break into the top 10.

Up against Singapore

Mallorca was paired against Singapore’s Jie Jonathan Ho Rui in the eighth round as of this writing.

King Xyan Beltran, who trailed Mallorca in the early rounds, is now the highest-ranked Filipino in the Under-14 standard competition with 5.0 points.

Beltran drew Vietnam’s Vo Bao Lam Nguyen in the sixth round after beating Singapore’s CM Shyan Evin Sung Tze in the fifth.

Vietnam’s Vo Bao Lam Nguyen and India’s Sriram Jayin Vakada share the lead with 6.0 points each, with Nguyen holding the top spot on superior tiebreak points.

Another Vietnamese player, Tung Quan Nguyen, sits in third with 5.5 points, followed by fellow Vietnamese CM Anh Tu Le, also with 5.5 points.
