The police on Thursday (August 13, 2026) arrested a 64-year-old Canadian citizen for allegedly defrauding several people of around ₹3.5 crore by promising jobs in Canada.
The accused was identified as James Kutty Kuriakose, a native of Changanassery and currently residing at Panangad in Ernakulam.
The Chingavanam police, which had issued a lookout circular against him, traced him to the Bangladesh border with the assistance of the immigration wing of the Border Security Force (BSF) and arrested him.
According to the preliminary investigation, Kuriakose collected large sums from several people after promising to arrange nursing and other jobs in Canada. He allegedly failed to provide the promised jobs or return the money, leading to complaints of fraud.
The police are also examining reports of similar financial fraud cases registered against him at various police stations across Kerala.
