The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has put on hold the property tax revision with immediate effect.

In a press release on Thursday (August 13, 2026), GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said: “The GCC, upon careful examination of the revision and associated grievances raised by the public, has decided to put on hold the tax revision with immediate effect. The tax shall be reversed to the amount prevailing before the revision. For those assesses who have paid this revised demand, the amount shall be adjusted for subsequent half years as advance tax.”

The civic body also plans to reduce basic street rate for property tax in some residential areas of the city. Dr. Sameeran said: “The added areas of the city will have a reduction in basic street rates. Core city rates will be mostly maintained. However, the reduction in basic street rate is a separate process. It requires further consultations and policy decisions to implement it”

The GCC has conducted a study as part of the basic street rate rationalisation for property tax. According to the report, zones in added areas have registered a higher basic street rate when compared to residential areas in the core city. For instance, residents of Alandur have complained about high rates, when compared to developed areas such as Anna Nagar.

As the residents have opposed the ongoing reassessment drive, the GCC had started receiving appeals for remeasurement of the houses. The civic body received 69 appeals and planned to go for remeasurement in the presence of the assessee and finalise the appeal. As many as 30,520 assessees had paid the revised property tax after receiving the notice for reassessment of buildings in the 15 zones of the city. The GCC had received ₹11.10 crore in property tax payments as on Thursday. It had generated 3.49 lakh notices for property tax reassessment.
