Samoa's opposition leader, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has been arrested and charged with defamation towards Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt.

Local media is reporting that the charges relate to allegations made by Tuilaepa during a media conference last week.

During the conference he called the prime minister a liar and also alleged he and his government were misusing public funds.

The Court Registrar confirmed Tuilaepa faces four charges of defamation and one charge of harassment utilising means of electronic communication.

He has been released on bail this morning.
