Live, local, late breaking…. Stay tuned to the TV stocks TV is one of the reasons why the Wisconsin gubernatorial Democratic primary didn't go the way pollsters had expected. According to NBC News and a few other outlets, David Crowley was able to defeat Francesca Hong with a $4 million ad spend in the last few weeks of the campaign, mostly focused on television. The report on NBC News said "Hong's campaign and groups supporting her spent less than half a million dollars on ads throughout the primary – none of which ran on broadcast or cable TV." That didn't work out so well in the end as Crowley won, defying almost all expectations. As the report found, TV ads have not outlived their usefulness. As the United States gears up for the Nov. 3 midterm election, several stocks in the broadcast business may be winners. Sinclair is up almost 4% so far this August, and is up 15% from the March 31 low. The company has stations in 79 markets including in battleground areas like North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Texas and Kansas. Nexstar is up 7.5% in a month. The company has TV stations in 132 markets covering 80% of Americans. That would include North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Gray Media is up almost 30% in a month. The company has some smaller markets and covers 37% of the American TV viewing public, but it's also operating in all those states with contested House and Senate races. GTN 1M mountain Gray Media in the past month China and the U.S. " Squawk Box " is taking a good look at the prospect of a large-scale economic event happening in China that could affect the U.S. The team will discuss such a threat on Friday morning. The S & P 500 and the Russell 2000 are at highs, and the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Industrials are near highs. That's not quite the case in China. The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI) is off 17% from the October high. The fund is down about 9% in 2026. The iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) is down 19% from the 52-week high. It's also down 9% in 2026. The KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) is down 38% from the October high. It is down 21% in 2026. Retail sales The July reading comes out at 8:30 a.m. live on "Squawk Box." The Dow Jones consensus estimate is for 0.1%. A month earlier, the number came in at 0.2%. The State Street PDR S & P Retail ETF (XRT) is off 4.5% from the August high. The mall's got it all, but some of those stocks aren't doing so hot. Bed Bath and Beyond is down 65% from the October high. American Eagle is down 42% from the high, and so is Bath and Body Works . Kohl's , Dillard's , Tapestry are all down 20% from the highs. Gap is down 31% from the high. AEO YTD mountain American Eagle Outfitters in 2026 Disney The big D23 expo , the biggest Disney fan event starts Friday. CNBC TV's Julia Boorstin will speak with CEO Josh D'Amaro in the 11 a.m. hour of " Squawk on the Street ." It'll be his first interview at the helm of the entertainment giant. The stock is off 12.5% from the September high. The stock closed at $104.80 on Thursday. At one point in March 2021, this was a $203 stock. M-I-C'ya tomorrow on CNBC!
