Firefighters were battling a blaze at the Gloriavale Christian Community late on Friday night.

Fire and Emergency said the fire in the remote community on the South Island's West Coast was reported shortly before 9pm.

One crew arrived to find a building at the site well involved on fire.

FENZ shift manager Simon Lyford said the building was "some distance" from Gloriavale's hostels, and they had no concerns with people sleeping on site on Friday night.

As of 10.30pm, FENZ said they had isolated power from the building and four of the crews were dealing with the fire from inside the building.

When the fire was reported, the caller said everyone had been evacuated from the building, FENZ said. They were not aware of any injuries.

Five fire crews, four fire trucks and two tankers were on site late on Friday night.

The fire was not being treated as suspicious.
