On the latest episode of the Daily Mail's Palace Confidential, Richard Kay and Richard Eden are joined by special guest Sarah Vine to mark ten years since Prince Harry met Meghan Markle in the summer of 2016.

During the show, the panel discuss Harry and Meghan's recent trip to British Columbia, Canada, to attend their friend David Foster's charity gala.

Music producer Foster, 76, described by Editor-at-Large Kay on the show as Harry's 'surrogate father', famously arranged a place for the couple to stay in Canada over Christmas 2019, weeks before they quit royal duties.

At the gala, marking the 40th anniversary of Foster's charitable foundation, Meghan wore Diana's diamond and sapphire butterfly earrings. They were the exact pair worn by the Princess when she visited British Columbia in 1986.

Both Kay and columnist Vine agreed the style choice cannot have been a coincidence, with Kay saying it would have taken a considerable amount of research to match the exact jewellery.

'It does feel to me she is trying to stake a claim on Diana's legacy,' he argued.

'It would have taken an enormous amount of research to find out precisely what Diana wore on a visit to an obscure part of Canada. No offence, but it was a remote part of Canada back in 1986.

'She does look to me like she's trying to channel the mother-in-law she never met.'

Meghan has worn Diana's jewellery, gifted to her by Harry, on significant occasions before, including her wedding day and her first public appearance after announcing her pregnancy with Archie.

Vine called it 'bizarre' to see Diana's accessories worn to an ordinary red carpet event, concluding Meghan's choice was 'pretty calculated'.

Eden went further, suggesting Meghan is deliberately emphasising her connection to Diana ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Princess's death.

Meghan recently shared pictures from the Sussexes' private family holiday in Europe, one of which appears to show them visiting Diana's grave on the Spencer family estate.

'That is something Harry loves,' Eden said.

'He's written about how he loves that Meghan used the same perfume, and there are lots of things that remind him of his mother.

'I think we can expect a lot more of this because next year, of course, is the 30th anniversary of Diana's death. There'll be events associated with that.

'The Diana Awards, the charity, are already planning events, and I think we can expect more of this from Meghan.'
