"Indian dependence on Russia's crude surged to a record in July, with shipments from the country making up 50.83% of imports by the third-biggest oil buyer and consumer, or 2.47 million barrels per day," the report said.

India's imports of Russian oil in July increased by 62.4% year-on-year. However, compared with the record figure of 2.6 million barrels per day in June, imports fell by 4.8%.

The news agency recalled that in January, Indian oil refineries began reducing imports of Russian oil to avoid higher US tariffs while New Delhi was negotiating a trade deal with Washington. Later, amid supply disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East, Indian refineries increased their purchases of Russian crude.

India's purchases of Russian crude oil are now facing uncertainty after the US Senate passed a bill this month proposing 100% tariffs on buyers of Russian oil, increasing economic pressure on Moscow over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
