The Committee of Privileges of the Lok Sabha has issued a notice to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, asking him to submit his reply by August 28, on a breach of privilege notice moved against him by BJP MP Anurag Thakur.

Mr. Thakur, in his letter on July 30 to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accused Mr. Gandhi of using unparliamentary language, defying the chair, and making unsubstantiated allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Mr. Thakur’s notice states that Mr. Gandhi used derogatory terms, including “idiots” and “andhbhakts,” during the debate on July 29. It states that the Congress leader violated Rule 352 by disregarding the instructions of the Chair, and Rule 353 by leveling allegations against a Minister without giving the required advance notice.

Separately, BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal wrote to the Speaker on July 29, asking him to take cognisance of Mr. Gandhi’s alleged use of unparliamentary expressions against the Home Minister during the same debate. Mr. Jaiswal asked the Speaker to initiate action under the Rules of Procedure.

The Committee of Privileges will examine both complaints and take up the matter after receiving Mr. Gandhi’s reply.
