Apple TV just added a bunch of classic movies for subscribers, and the move comes just ahead of an especially film-heavy fall lineup for the streamer.
New movies on Apple TV arrive ahead of big fall lineup
Movies are having a moment. Theatrical hits like The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Obsession, and more seemingly point to a growing cultural excitement for films.
And Apple looks set to capitalize on that trend.
This week Apple TV added a ton of classic movies free for subscribers. Titles vary by region, but in the US they include popular hits like The Martian, Arrival, Gone Girl, The Proposal, Zodiac, 21 Jump Street, and more.
With these additions, Apple essentially doubled its film library overnight.
Licensing these movies doesn’t mean Apple is giving up on original films. In fact, its surprise movie drop comes just ahead of a packed fall lineup of brand-new movies.
Apple TV has six new films coming soon with its fall lineup:
- September 4: Mayday
- October 2: The Last First: Winter K2
- October 9: Matchbox The Movie
- October 16: Tenzing
- November 13: Being Heumann
- November 25: Way of the Warrior Kid
Historically, Apple’s film efforts have veered between Oscar fare and more mass-market popcorn flicks. This fall, it’s offering a healthy mix of both.
Mayday, Matchbox, and Way of the Warrior Kid all look like fun, lighthearted action films, anchored by stars like Ryan Reynolds and John Cena. While Being Heumann, Tenzing, and The Last First are clearly aiming for awards contention.
Apple continues to find a lot of success with its shows, like the just-returned Ted Lasso. It will be fascinating to see how its film plans shape up.
