Police have charged a man with three counts of mischief after he allegedly threw eggs at a Saskatoon synagogue.

Police did not name the suspect but say the 31-year-old had turned himself in and was later released on conditions.

Earlier this month, officers were called to investigate the egging at the Congregation Agudas Israel Synagogue.

The synagogue’s rabbi had said on social media the building and nearby cars were splattered while congregants were praying inside.

Police had later shared an image of the man, which showed him holding a carton of eggs.

Supt. James Oliver says the hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation but that a hate crime is not a specific charge under the Criminal Code.

“As a police service, we recognize the significance of incidents that target faith-based communities and the impact on their sense of safety and belonging,” Oliver said in a news release Friday.

“Any evidence that an offence was motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate is considered by the court as an aggravating factor during sentencing.”
