For much of the past two seasons, Zack Wheeler's future seemed straightforward. The Philadelphia Phillies ace had openly discussed finishing out his current contract before stepping away from baseball for good, prioritizing time with his family after an accomplished career.

Now, however, one of baseball's most dominant pitchers appears to be reconsidering that timeline.

As Wheeler continues building a resume that increasingly lays out an undeniable Hall of Fame case, his retirement may not be arriving as quickly as he had previously suggested.

Amid a resurgent season following a significant surgery, Wheeler acknowledged this week that his long-term plans are no longer as certain as they once appeared.

"We'll see,” Wheeler responded on Tuesday, when asked about changing his plan to retire after his current contract expires, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. “It'll probably depend on what happens next year. It's something to think about for sure.”

That response represents a notable shift for a pitcher who had previously suggested 2027 could be his final season.

"But remember those original plans of returning to health this year, pitching one final season in 2027, and then sailing off into the sunset with his family, calling it a career?” Nightengale asked. “Well, ever so quietly, those plans are on hold. Wheeler has yet to open talks about a contract extension with the Phillies, but the way he's dominating, the way Hall of Fame voters are changing their view for entrance to Cooperstown, he's not sure he's ready to say good-bye."

With Philadelphia once again among the National League contenders, Wheeler's sustained excellence has transformed what once looked like a firm retirement plan into a year-to-year decision.

Wheeler's change in outlook comes as his performance continues to rank among the very best in baseball and it might also be informed by a thoracic outlet syndrome surgery he underwent last year, which involved the removal of his rib but which doesn't seem to have impacted him on the mound.

"Wheeler stored in a closet the rib that was removed during surgery to fix his thoracic outlet syndrome,” Andy McCullough wrote for The Athletic. “He is pitching like the operation never even happened. He might be the best in the game."

That level of dominance has naturally fueled speculation that Wheeler could continue pitching beyond his current contract if both his health and effectiveness remain intact.

Nightengale noted that the Phillies have not yet begun extension discussions with Wheeler, but those conversations could become increasingly relevant if the long-time ace continues producing at a Cy Young-caliber level.
