A total of 12 participants, in the contingent of 70, from Tamil Nadu have been selected to represent India at the WorldSkills Competition to be held next month in Shanghai, China.

Under the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC), the students are selected through State-level competitions and are trained in their respective skills once selected after the regional rounds.

V.S. Arjun, 20, from Chennai has been selected to represent India under mobile app development category on the international stage. “My college encouraged me to register for the skills competition organised by the State government. Once I was selected, the corporation gave me extra training under various companies in India to hone my skills,” he said.

After the regional competitions, Arjun was selected for the Nationals too, where Tamil Nadu won 46 medals. He has been undergoing training for the last two months to prepare for the WorldSkills Competition.

“Right now I’m training in Surat for six hours every day working on multiple projects. As I have to develop over seven projects in under two hours in Shanghai, I’m training to optimise my time,” added Arjun, a student at Chennai Institute of Technology.

Along with Arjun, Suresh Kumar G.M., Ragul K.B., Rohit, Mohamed Mafaz P.R., Aswin S., Mohammed Salam Z., Mohanraj, Surendiran, Joy Das, Thanushree, and Gokula Kannan will also participate under various categories including intelligent security technology, cooking, plumbing and heating, and dental prosthetics among others.

According to an official from TNSDC, training for the participants begins as soon as they enter the third round in the State-level competitions. “They undergo at least a month-long training to enhance their skills with experts in their domain to prepare them for competitions. Through these initiatives, we also widen their placement opportunities,” he said.
