Japan PM Takaichi avoids mentioning ‘remorse’ over WWII in anniv speech

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made no mention of Japan’s “remorse” over World War II in her speech at a memorial service in Tokyo on Saturday to mourn the war dead on the 81st anniversary of the country’s surrender.

Takaichi also avoided directly mentioning Japan’s wartime aggression in Asia, including China and the Korean Peninsula.

At last year’s memorial, her predecessor, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, vowed to keep in mind the nation’s “remorse” over the war, using the term for the first time in 13 years as a Japanese leader. /dl
