It seems that it's still too early for Captain Jack Sparrow to hang up his hat and retire from his (dis)respectful career as a buccaneer. According to Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp could resume his role as the lovable alcoholic scoundrel for the long-awaited sixth installment in the movie series.
Speaking to Deadline during D23 2026, Bruckheimer had the following to say regarding Pirates of the Caribbean 6: "We’re talking with Johnny [Depp], we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done." That's not a lot of solid information, but coming from the producer of the series, it's enough to give fans hope to see Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 soon.
Deadline also mentions "solid sources" revealing that Jack Sparrow won't return as the main character this time, but in a support role to Margot Robbie, who was announced as the start of the movie back in 2020. Since then, the development of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been tormented. Robbie mentioned in 2022 that the project had been canceled by Disney, but Bruckheimer disputed the claim later that year. More recently, the rumor mill surrounding the movie started spinning again, and the producer's latest statement gives further credit to a comeback for the project.
Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth and, at this time, the latest movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, came out in 2017, grossing a respectable $795.9M worldwide. Depp's domestic violence allegations, along with a perceived creative slump for the franchise, led to Disney essentially shelving Pirates of the Caribbean for nearly a decade. But it's not time yet to retire this old, lucrative ship, at least according to Bruckheimer. It remains to be seen if Depp's return and Robbie's alleged leading role will be enough to make the wreck rise up from the abyss and sail again.
