Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum has officially announced the expansion of its operations into north Kerala with the launch of a new Goethe Examination Centre in Kozhikode. The facility aims to meet the rapidly rising demand for certified German language qualifications among students and young professionals across the Malabar region.
Until now, candidates residing in Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram, Kasaragod, and surrounding districts were forced to travel long distances to take internationally recognised Goethe-Zertifikat examinations. The new centre significantly eases this logistical burden, bringing regular assessments closer to home. The initial Goethe Certificate Examinations in Kozhikode are scheduled to begin on August 19, with the organisation planning to host assessment sessions every month moving forward.
The expansion comes a time when a growing number of young people in North Kerala seek higher education, vocational training, and professional career opportunities connected to Germany, Alexandra Mittler, Director of Language Programmes for South Asia at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi, said during an interaction with the media in Kozhikode on Monday (August 17). The new centre has been established at TT Avenue at Govindapuram in Kozhikode. (phone: 974516007).
Surging interest
She highlighted the surging interest for German language in the Malabar region. “We have witnessed a remarkable increase in interest for the German language among youths in north Kerala. For many of them, Germany is opening doors to new academic and professional opportunities... The new Goethe Examination Centre in Calicut is our response to this growing demand, ” she said.
Besides offering qualifications aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), Goethe-Zentrum intends to establish a long-term cultural presence in Kozhikode. Future plans for the area include German film screenings, music and performing arts programmes, literary events, workshops, and collaborative projects involving local universities and educational institutions.
Syed Ibrahim, Director of Goethe-Zentrum Keralam, and Consultant to the Federal Republic of Germany, Keralam, emphasised that the project extends well beyond testing. “Our vision for Kozhikode goes much beyond examinations,” he explained. “Goethe-Zentrum would like to develop a sustained presence in north Kerala and create opportunities for people here to experience contemporary German culture and meaningful Indo-German exchange,” Mr. Ibrahim added.
Building on more than two decades of educational and cultural work by Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum, the new centre establishes a permanent foothold for German language certification and cultural partnership across the region.
