Despite the police denying permission citing law and order concerns, the All Karnataka State Students Association (AKSSA) has announced an indefinite satyagraha from Tuesday near the Michigan Compound in Saptapur of Dharwad demanding action on issues concerning students and job aspirants.

AKSSA president Kanthakumar told presspersons in Dharwad on Monday that students from across the district will participate in a peaceful protest and remain at the venue until their demands are addressed.

The association has sought a re-examination for candidates affected by irregularities in the examination conducted for the recruitment of police constables. It has also demanded an inquiry into irregularities in recruitment conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) and stringent action against those found responsible.

The association has also raised concerns over the implementation of announcements made in the State Budget. The proposals, including the establishment of Indira Canteens and digital libraries for students, are yet to be implemented, Mr. Kanthakumar said.

He also urged the State government to issue a notification for the recruitment of 10,000 additional teachers, over and above the 15,000 teacher posts for which recruitment has already been notified.

Permission denied

Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar told presspersons that permission for the protest near Michigan Compound has been denied as the area has several hospitals and is home to a large number of senior citizens and students.

The police have also taken into consideration the violations of the conditions laid down by them during the students protest in September last year.

Mr. Shashikumar said that the association has not furnished some of the details sought for by the police regarding the proposed agitation.

Referring to an earlier High Court order related to an earlier denial of permission for protest by the police, Mr. Shashikumar said that the court subsequently permitted only 100 people to participate in a protest at Nehru Stadium in Hubballi at a designated time, subject to certain conditions.

He said that if AKSSA is ready to comply with the conditions prescribed by the High Court, permission can be considered for a protest at the Nehru Stadium in Hubballi.
