The late Queen was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - and the royals have continued to show just how much they treasured Elizabeth II by naming their children after her.

Princess Eugenie's daughter Adelaide - born on 3 August at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, weighing 6lb 9oz - has become the latest relative to be named in honour of Her late Majesty.

Taking to Instagram yesterday, the King's niece, 36, announced she had officially called her little one Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.

The youngest daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson said the names are from people she and her husband Jack Brooksbank 'love and admire, past and present'.

Her late Majesty - titled Elizabeth Alexandra Mary when she was born - was herself named after her mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who was Duchess of York when she gave birth to her in 1926.

Her first middle name Alexandra came from her great-grandmother and wife of King Edward VII, while her second middle name Mary came from her grandmother and wife of King George V.

But just as her name was inspired by those who came before her, so her name Elizabeth has been used by younger generations of her own family.

From her daughter Anne to three of her four granddaughters, and her great-grandchild Lilibet, the Daily Mail brings you all the royals whose names have been inspired by the late Queen...

Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have called their daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank

Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank

Princess Eugenie wrote on Instagram yesterday: 'Two weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we've had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.

'We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts.

'Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.'

Referring to the couple's other two children, she added: 'Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.'

The announcement was accompanied by a photo of the newborn sleeping and was greeted with messages of goodwill from Eugenie's many followers.

The name Adelaide was inspired by Queen Adelaide (1792-1849), married to William IV.

The name Annina is understood to have been inspired by a personal connection.

Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank divide their time between a picturesque villa in Portugal and a cottage at Kensington Palace.

The baby, who will not be an HRH, is born 15th in line to the throne, with her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, moving down to 16th place.

Buckingham Palace officials previously revealed the couple's sons August, five, and Ernest, two, were 'very excited' to welcome a new member of the family.

Athena Elizabeth Rose

On Wednesday, 28 January, 2025 Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles' niece, 36, and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi had welcomed their second child together the week prior

On Wednesday, 28 January, 2025 Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles' niece, 36, and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi had welcomed their second child together the week prior.

Athena is the third child in the Mapelli Mozzi brood alongside the couple's daughter Sienna and Wolfie, eight, from Edo's first marriage to Dara Huang.

Announcing the arrival of Athena in a sweet Instagram post, Buckingham Palace wrote: 'Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on Wednesday, 22nd January, at 12:57pm.

'The baby was born weighing 4 pounds and 5 ounces. The King and Queen, and other members of The Royal Family have all been informed and are delighted with the news.

'Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their wonderful care.

'Her Royal Highness and her daughter are healthy and doing well, and the family are enjoying spending time together with Athena's older siblings, Wolfie and Sienna.'

Athena is also the 14th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the second to be born since her death in 2022, following the arrival of Eugenie's second child Ernest last year.

Like her elder sister Sienna, Athena's middle name is likely a sweet tribute to Princess Beatrice's late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi

Princess Eugenie posted a sweet snap of Sienna and her older cousin August Brooksbank at London Zoo to celebrate Earth Day in 2023

Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi was born in September 2021 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, weighing 6lbs 2oz.

It is little surprise Princess Beatrice also honoured Queen Elizabeth by naming her child after her, given how close Fergie's daughter was to her grandmother.

She once told Hello: 'I have two role models, my mother and my grandmother. I am very lucky that I happen to be related to these two incredible women.'

Her late Majesty was said to be 'delighted with the news', the palace announced in a statement following Sienna's birth.

Although her mother is a princess, Sienna, who was the late Queen's 12th great-grandchild, will not have a royal title.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor

Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor (pictured with her mother Meghan) was born at 11.40am on 4 June 2021 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, weighing 7lb 11oz

Lilibet was the late monarch's deeply personal childhood nickname, and was used only by her parents, a few close friends and her beloved Prince Philip.

Her granddaughter Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born at 11.40am on 4 June 2021 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, weighing 7lb 11oz.

However, despite the sweet tribute to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth was said to be infuriated by Harry and Meghan's claim that she had given her blessing to their daughter being named Lilibet.

One member of her staff said the late monarch was 'as angry as I'd ever seen her' after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicly stated they would not have used her private family nickname if she had not been 'supportive'.

The couple even ordered their aggressive firm of lawyers, Schillings, to write to news broadcasters and publishers - most notably the BBC - saying claims she was not asked for permission were false and defamatory and should not be repeated.

But when the Sussexes attempted to 'co-opt' Buckingham Palace into 'propping up' their version of events, they were 'rebuffed'. The claim came in Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story, by the Mail's writer Robert Hardman.

In 2021, Harry and Meghan's decision to call their new daughter Lilibet, who was born in California, raised eyebrows.

Lilibet was the affectionate childhood nickname of the late Queen, said to have come about because as a child Princess Elizabeth could never pronounce her name properly.

It was only ever used by her parents, King George VI, the Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret, as well as her husband, Prince Philip, and a handful of close friends.

At the time, the BBC reported it had been told by a palace source that the Queen was not asked by the duke and duchess as to whether they could use it.

Other sources told media, including the Mail, that while the Queen was called by her grandson and his wife, she felt she wasn't in a position to say no.

But the Sussexes' spokesman insisted the couple would not have used the name had the Queen not been 'supportive'.

They said at the time: 'The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement - in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.

'During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.'

Strongly-worded legal letters were then sent out.

Hardman writes that some of the late monarch's household were particularly 'interested' that amidst a wealth of private family information and criticism of staff members, Harry mysteriously 'omitted' the entire incident from his memoir.

The author says: 'One privately recalled that Elizabeth II had been 'as angry as I'd ever seen her' in 2021 after the Sussexes announced that she had given them her blessing to call their baby daughter 'Lilibet', the Queen's childhood nickname.

'The couple subsequently fired off warnings of legal action against anyone who dared to suggest otherwise, as the BBC had done. However, when the Sussexes tried to co-opt the Palace into propping up their version of events, they were rebuffed.

'Once again, it was a case of "recollections may vary" - the late Queen's reaction to the Oprah Winfrey interview - as far as Her Majesty was concerned.

'Those noisy threats of legal action duly evaporated and the libel actions against the BBC never materialised.'

Lilibet finally got to meet the late Queen when the Montecito-based Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the UK for the Jubilee celebration in June 2022 after stepping back from their royal duties in 2020.

Lena Elizabeth Tindall

Lena put on an animated display at her uncle Peter Phillips's wedding to Harriet Sperling this summer. She retained her title of most playful royal as she joyfully played in the rain

While her elder sister was called Mia Grace Tindall, Lena was given the middle name Elizabeth as a nod to the late Queen.

Lena Elizabeth Tindall was born on June 18, 2018, at the Stroud Maternity Unit in Gloucestershire, weighing 9lbs 3oz.

While her name might be considered an unconventional choice for a member of the Royal Family, it actually echoes Princess Helena, the fifth child of Queen Victoria.

Lena takes after her father in enjoying rugby and plays for a local youth side.

And despite not having a royal title, Lena has made her presence known in the Royal Family with her playful antics.

She's often caught pulling faces or causing a stir on royal outings, giving Prince Louis a run for his money.

Lena made her first official appearance during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Then she put on an animated display at her uncle Peter Phillips's wedding to Harriet Sperling this summer. She retained her title of most playful royal as she joyfully played in the rain.

The young royal was captured entertaining royal guests by toying with her vibrant brolly outside Kemble's All Saints Church following the private ceremony.

Holding her umbrella above Mike's head, the young royal erupted into a fit of laughter before pictures later showed the father carrying the item instead.

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana

The Prince and Princess of Wales' daughter is named after King Charles, the late Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II.

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana bears a striking resemblance to her ‘Gan Gan’ at the same age.

Like her great-grandmother, the late Queen, Charlotte also has already shown a liking for horse-riding.

Similarly to Her late Majesty, Charlotte goes by several nicknames. Her father has been heard calling her Mignonette, which means small and delicate in French, while her mother calls her Lottie, a popular abbreviation of Charlotte.

Isla Elizabeth Phillips

Bridesmaids Georgina Sperling, Savannah Phillips and Isla Phillips depart after the Royal wedding of Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling at All Saints Church on June 06, 2026 in Kemble, England

Isla was born at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on March 29 2012, weighing 7lbs 4oz. A statement released by the Palace at the time expressed how the entire Royal Family were 'delighted' by the arrival of a second great-grandchild for Elizabeth and Philip.

Given the adorable young royal was born during the Queen's milestone Jubilee year it seems somewhat unsurprising that her second name is Elizabeth - a fitting tribute to her beloved great-grandmother.

Although she takes the Queen's name, the young royal is not entitled to a title. Her older sister is called Savannah Anne Kathleen Phillips.

Both are typically kept out of the spotlight, often only spotted together at horse trials or at traditional Royal Family events like Easter and Christmas.

Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor

The Queen's youngest granddaughter is an accomplished carriage driver and equestrian, taking after both the late Queen and Prince Philip.

Speaking to the Daily Mail in April 2021, royal author Ingrid Seward explained how Lady Louise has 'always been an asset' to the royal family and is 'very polite' which Her late Majesty loved.

The late Queen's granddaughter, who had a Saturday job in her local garden centre before graduating from St Andrews University, is said to be 'sweet, humble and down-to-earth' by those who know her.

While many would love for Lady Louise to join the dwindling ranks of working royals, the 22-year-old is taking a gap year to consider her options, it was revealed by the Daily Mail.

During her gap year, she will, according to Buckingham Palace, be undertaking a mixture of working, volunteering and travelling. Officials say they won’t comment further on her future career aspirations at this stage.

Lady Louise's plan to take a gap year is not entirely surprising; it is fairly common for members of the Royal Family to take the time off to gain life experience and explore the world before committing to their duty.

After graduating from Eton College, Prince William took a gap year before enrolling at St Andrews, where he met and fell in love with the Princess of Wales.

During that time, he undertook 'preparation for survival' exercises with the Welsh Guards in Belize, working as a volunteer with Raleigh International in Chile, working on a dairy farm in the UK and visiting countries in Africa.

At the time, William said he was grateful not to have gotten 'special treatment' as the future king but that the 'living conditions aren't exactly what I'm used to', Tatler reported.

In a twist of fate, Catherine, who attended Marlborough College, also undertook the same programme when she visited Chile during her own gap year.

She also studied painting in Florence and crewed on Round the World Challenge boats in the Solent.

Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary was born at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey after her mother was rushed to the hospital with complications one month early.

She weighed just 4lb 9oz while her mother, Sophie, was left suffering from severe blood loss and was separated from her much longed-for child for several weeks.

She has since returned to the hospital to thank staff for saving her life.

Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall

Zara takes her middle names from her mother Anne and her grandmother Elizabeth - and shares a love of horse-riding with both.

She won team silver at equestrian eventing at the London 2012 Olympic games, and she was also crowned world eventing champion in Germany in 2006 - which led to the British public voting her BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, she spoke of how proud she was of her grandmother addressing the nation.

Appearing on GMB, she said Her late Majesty urging the British public to come together and protect the NHS was '100% what the country needed' at that moment. She added: 'I think we're obviously very proud.'

Princess Beatrice Elizabeth Mary

In a sign of her closeness to the late Queen, the monarch offered to hold Princess Beatrice's wedding reception at Buckingham Palace in 2020. The monarch also leant her the Queen Mary tiara which she wore to her own wedding in 1947, while Beatrice recycled one of Elizabeth II's dresses for her wedding gown

Born in 1988, Beatrice - the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson - was gifted Elizabeth as her middle name.

Her younger sister Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena, missed out and is the only granddaughter not to carry Elizabeth's name.

Although she is not considered to be a senior royal, Princess Beatrice does at times carry out royal duties.

Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise

Born in 1950, and the late Queen's first and only daughter, Princess Anne was perhaps unsurprisingly given Elizabeth as her middle name.

The pair shared a close bond and passion for sport and particularly equestrian events.

Anne, with Charles, was at the late Queen's bedside when she died.
